How to Remove Hard Water Stains from the Toilet

Cleaning the toilet is no one’s idea of a fun time, but it is one of those tasks that is going to help protect your health and overall comfort of your home. If you’re looking for some advice on how to remove hard water stains from the toilet the first time, you’re in the right spot! Below, you’ll learn about the different ways to effectively remove those stubborn hard water stains without stress or struggle.

What Are The Different Ways To Remove Hard Water Stains?

There are several methods to effectively get rid of those stains in your toilet. The one to choose depends on how bad the staining is, and how long it’s been since you cleaned it last. Your options include:

  • Baking soda and vinegar
  • Borax paste
  • Steel wool

How Do You Use Baking Soda and Vinegar for Hard Water Stains?

This is the mildest option for hard water stain cleaning, but it could be all your particular toilet needs! Here’s how to use it:

Pour 1 cup of vinegar into the toilet bowl and use the toilet brush to swirl it around the whole bowl. After a minute, add 1 cup of baking soda to the toilet bowl. Add another 1 cup of vinegar and it will start to fizz.

After 10 minutes, swish the combination solution around the bowl and pay extra attention to the grimy sections of your water line. Repeat several times over 30 minutes, then flush.

How Does Borax Paste Work for Toilet Cleaning?

You can also use a combination of equal parts borax and water for a bit of heavier duty cleaning. Substitute water for vinegar if you want extra power, still.

Liberally spread the paste directly over the worst stains and leave it for about 20 minutes or longer. Scrub the spots with your toilet brush, and then flush.

How Do You Use Steel Wool to Clean A Toilet?

Use fine grain steel wool to get at those really stubborn stains for the water line. This can be used with just water. The fine grain will effectively clean the toilet without scratching the porcelain as you scrub.

Because it takes more effort, this should be used only as a last resort after the above methods still leave a few spots behind. If they are still there after steel wool, you may need to resort to chemicals such as hydrochloric acid.

One last tip about hard water stains in toilets

Even though these techniques are going to help bring your toilet back to new again, you’ll want to do what you can to prevent them from building up in the firsts place! The best way to do that is through swishing your toilet brush around the bowl once a day, perhaps using a mild cleaner, too.

While no one likes the idea of cleaning the toilet, it’s nice to know that you can do it comfortably and effectively with the right tips and supplies to do so! You’ll want to have each of these in your pantry just in case you need a little extra cleaning help.
